You’re OK thinking about the unconventional ideas that could uplift society and norms to a higher standard? You like a challenge, or do you prefer convention in life? Filtering into today’s music, artistic expression, literature, and video footage can really soak you wet. It can increase the mental weight you put onto yourself and loved ones. It’s like taking a pill or substance to ‘numb’ your instinct to seek adventure and change.

Churches, kings and states have for centuries attempted to control society. When not successful, it results in disconnect, and revolt. Online and social media have created a platform for ‘Trolls’ and often use inflammatory messages to provoke emotional responses out of people, disrupting otherwise civil discussion. It’s disruptive technology in human practise, used as an outlet for self-fame, or public indiscretion. Add this to the fact that people receive biased information even in the most democracies, – the foundation for their input.

2020 again proved that the most value stakeholder remains to be
employees, and customers. Companies with a clearly customer centric business
plan and approach, by far received more positive media exposure. More than ever
before, smart collaboration between companies (innovation, growth,
sponsorships, alliance) were communicated during Covid-19.

TikTok is a short-form video app, often referred to as a “lip-syncing” app, which makes it sound like it’s some online karaoke experience. This app is also better known for act-out memes backed up by music, which get reproduced and remixed amongst users. This sounds like a digital drug party, but hey – we’re ever learning.

Some challenges
make us feel alive, engaged, connected, and fulfilled. Others simply overwhelm
us. Knowing the difference as you set bigger and bolder challenges for yourself
is critical to your sanity, success, and satisfaction (Brendon Burchard). When
we unpack a challenge for a client, do we enable them to feel alive, engaged,
and connected? Or do we overwhelm in a failed attempt to impress.

Did you know
that the song La Cucaracha is a traditional Spanish folk song – and that it
protested government at the time? That’s
a lie, it’s about a cockroach that cannot walk.
Got me thinking; how much
assumption or ignorance does its rounds in the arena of public communications;
hence the fertile ground for fake news to cockroach its way into public
perceptions. Is there room for more
creative means to best educate public to be more vigilant at spotting fake
news?

Southern
Africa boasts the highest number of mobile subscriptions across the world, but
for ‘old school communications’; not as much internet or social media
usage. With a population size of 2,61
million, Namibia has 2,75 million mobile subscriptions of which only a third of
these subscribers use the internet (31% penetration versus Southern Africa’s
51%), and of which 92% are prepaid connections.

So Namibia’s government budget is on the rims [she imagines smoking hot
donuts, the smell of rubber on tar, and screeching wheels amidst a screaming
audience]. However, this time it is not
a ‘post-race celebration’, rather an overwhelming amount of smoke-in-air, note
the punt. In order to ‘keep the wheels
on’, Namibia’s poorest communities are feeling the pinch. We have a population
of roughly (and only) 2,4 million citizens, is what’s poking me from the back.
About half of that is our youth. So imagine the perception towards our
leadership, when we’re barely making ends meet, albeit being rich in potential
and corporate enthusiasm

We
have 80billion neurons (better known as brain cells), and each of them
communicates with billions of other neurons. How’s that for working with ‘big
data’ that we can learn from? Learning from the actual organism that build
organisations makes sense. However, the science of communications is no easy
subject matter. The challenge increases when having to communicate science in a
way that effectively leads communities into awareness, and change.

Responding to corporates’ social investments (be it free
products, -food, houses, you name it); one of the reactions that I had to get
‘accustomed’ to is this: “What a waste, why don’t they do ____ (fill in blanc)
or just lower their price or invest in better service avenues”. This response usually ties with companies in either
a season or a general state of having a bad public reputation. Think of popular
parastatals, either in a good or dire financial state, and the social
investment choices they have made that you either agree or disagree with. I’m
thinking about T-Shirts here.

In the age of media abundance, trust is the glue in
the relationship between media and their audience. Digital has increased the ‘media pace’
exponentially. It gets sticky. A South
African story can become an Australian headline, with global echoes. With
thousands of influencers sharing a single story, an agenda can be set with
detrimental impact on a person/country’s reputation.

You
wake up with a sense of urgency. You cannot
touch it, nor label it. It’s like the itch at the back of your throat, or like
having the hiccups. I don’t know about you, but I hate having the hiccups. I
had some furious chilli over the weekend (Carolina Reaper, I kid you not) and I
felt like a Chernobyl victim for 5 seconds (it’s not funny, I know). But afterwards,
I had the greatest sense of accomplishment. I did not die, I (unknowingly) had the
courage to taste this crispy piece of pork belly (misled to assume its ‘hot’
like a ‘hot wing’), and then when my friend started laughing and clapping his
hands, I knew it. $%&!.

The year 2014 generated most negative coverage concerning the Namibian labour
agenda. Deteriorating employee relations as coupled with unsuccessful labour
union negotiations generated most coverage across media. Minimal reference to

Highlights
•2016 directs debates towards provision of water, sanitation, food, energy, and infrastructure throughout Namibia
•Media projects emphasis on Namibia’s sustainable management of pension funds, social grants, and ambitions towards more equal wealth, -education (ex. vocational training) and job creation
•Namibia still shadowed by the circumstances of continued economic uncertainty in world markets, poor international demand for commodity, and the negative impact of the drought (and performance of Rand)
•Namibians question the NEEEF and solidarity tax movements. The impact of the NEEEF policy must still be clarified as any uncertainties in the country’s regulatory framework hampers listings on the local index, and primary listings will become increasingly important for institutional investors seeking Namibian assets to comply with legislation
•Acts of crime; cyber security on the one end, and impact of gender based violence (women, children, rehabilitation of perpetrators), baby dumping, alcohol abuse, and high road accident rates still top the agenda on a consistent basis
•Towards 2016, Namibia meets increased reports on human trafficking and anti-corruption measures, with coverage also streaming towards digi-forums and social media channels on a more consistent basis
